Summer Landscape Painting by Hua Yan (Qing Dynasty)

This is a colored silk hanging scroll by Hua Yan, one of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou" in the Qing Dynasty, depicting a secluded and tranquil scene of lush trees and hermitages in Jiangnan during summer.

Inheriting history

This scroll has a clear provenance, having passed through the private collections of several prominent literati and wealthy collectors in the Jiangnan region since the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty. In modern times, it entered the world of top collectors both domestically and internationally, and has made a splendid appearance at major international art auctions. Its excellent condition demonstrates a clear lineage of private and market transmission.

Academic background and publications

Hua Yan was a representative of the innovation of the Yangzhou School of painting, and his landscape paintings integrated the brushwork of the Wu School of the Ming Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty. This work was painted in the winter of the Gengwu year. The brushwork is lively and the colors are clear and elegant. It is an important material for studying his late landscape painting style and the artistic achievement of "Xinluo Shanren" in the integration of poetry, calligraphy and painting. It has great academic and documentary value.

The poem inscribed by the artist in the upper left corner, "The shade of plum and bamboo is deep..." and the signature "Painted by Xinluo Shanren," are completely consistent with authoritative seal catalogs in terms of calligraphy and style, and are generally recognized as an authentic work by Hua Yan.
